Optimal Heart Rate to Burn Fat
10:09 AM (8 hours ago)
to me
The “fat-burning heart rate zone” is usually estimated at about 60–70% of your maximum heart rate (HRmax). In that range, a higher percentage of the calories you burn comes from fat.
A common estimate for max heart rate is:
HRmax≈220−age
Then calculate:
-
Lower end: HRmax × 0.60
-
Upper end: HRmax × 0.70
Example for a 40-year-old:
-
Estimated HRmax = 180 bpm
-
Fat-burning zone ≈ 108–126 bpm
A few important points:
-
Lower-intensity exercise burns a higher percentage of fat.
-
Higher-intensity exercise often burns more total calories overall, which can help fat loss more effectively over time.
-
The best long-term fat-loss approach is usually:
-
regular cardio,
-
some higher-intensity sessions,
-
strength training,
-
and nutrition/sleep consistency.
-
General training zones:
-
50–60% HRmax: easy recovery
-
60–70% HRmax: classic “fat-burning” zone
-
70–85% HRmax: cardio/fitness improvement
-
85%+ HRmax: high-intensity performance work
